On the adoption of the so-called return directive in the European Parliament, Sahra Wagenknecht, European deputy and member of the party executive, states:
This directive is inhuman and constitutes a gross violation of human rights. Up to 18 months of detention before explusion for people without valid papers – it is this shameful compromise that the European Parliament agreed on today. Instead of legalising the stay of people who in part have already been living in the EU for many years and often enough do every kind of dirt work nobody else would like to do, these people are now to be treated like criminals. Added to that is the fact that returned migrants can be barred for five years from re-entering this country or any other country of the EU.
It is shameful to see how the reduction of fundamental rights in Europe has been advanced precisely by the German government, especially by interior minister Schäuble. This while precisely German history supplies particularly good reasons for a human treatment of refugees and immigrants.
THE LEFT is of the opinion that all men should have the possibility to flee from persecution and poverty. For this reason, the renewed extension of fortress Europe should be exposed resolutely. The next occasion for that is 5 July in Berlin, where we shall demonstrate for a right to migration and the reintroduction of the basic right to asylum.
